National Reconciliation Week encourages Australians to continue to contribute to reconciliation, strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-indigenous Australians.

Many in our community came together in June to mark National Reconciliation Week, including a wonderful day of celebration of the 25 years of work undertaken by Nillumbik Reconciliation Group (NRG) volunteers and a breakfast in Banyule with Aunty Jill Gallagher AEO, CEO of Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO).

This celebration included fantastic performances by the Djirri Djirri Dancers, singer-songwriter and didgeridoo player Scott Darlow, and the Eltham High School Symphony Band, whose performances were captivating and left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.

The packed audience at the Eltham Community and Reception Centre demonstrated strong support for the Uluṟu Statement from the Heart and their deep gratitude for the work of NRG over 25 years.

Guests at Banyule’s breakfast were lucky to hear a heartfelt speech from Aunty Jill Gallagher, highlighting the importance of the Voice to Parliament referendum.

Our local schools also participated, with activities such as Eltham’s Our Lady Help Of Christians creating a beautiful display of hearts decorated by students which contained messages of what Reconciliation meant to them.

Quote attributable to Vicki Ward MP, Member for Eltham:

“I am very grateful for the 25 years of work by NRG, bringing education, inclusion and Reconciliation across our schools, sporting club and community groups.  Banyule Council is to also be congratulated for their support for Reconciliation and the Uluṟu Statement. Later this year we have an opportunity to give Indigenous Australians a Voice to Parliament, giving them the opportunity to put forward their thoughts on policies that affect them and their community. This referendum is an important step on our journey towards Reconciliation.”
